DIABLO, Wash. – A wildfire in the North Cascades of Whatcom County made significant growth over the weekend.
The Sourdough Fire near the town of Diablo has spread to nearly 6,000 acres amid unfavorable conditions.
Smoke that has made its way into Whatcom County caused poor visibility that prevented helicopters from assisting in the fight on Sunday, August 20th.
Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz said in a press conference Friday that this fire is to blame for the drop in local air quality.
She added that the steep terrain is making the fight difficult.
The Sourdough Fire is currently 12% contained and is expected to continue through September, possibly into October.
Highway 20 remains closed between Newhalem and Silver Star gate.
And Governor Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency over the weekend as other wildfires continue to spread across Washington.
Attorney General Bob Ferguson issued a follow-up warning on Monday, August 21st, where he cautioned businesses and hotels against price gouging.
He says his office is on alert for price increases on essential goods and services that aim to exploit residents impacted by the fires.
Ferguson warns people to watch for any price gouging and to report any incidents they see.
Two fires near Spokane County have each grown to 10,000 acres, burned over 185 structures and left at least two dead over the weekend.
Level 3 evacuations are currently in place for areas of Medical Lake and Elk, Washington.
