FOX ISLAND, Wash. – A gray whale that had been observed in Puget Sound was found dead on the shore of Fox Island near Tacoma.

The Cascadia Research Collective says the adult male was seen several times in southern Puget Sound and was last seen alive in Mayo Cove on March 27th.

The whale was emaciated and it is being examined to determine cause of death.

The collective believes it is part of the Unusual Mortality Event that began in 2019.

The cause of that die-off is still being determined.
