BELLINGHAM, WA. – (KGMI.com) There is no need to sound the alarm if you hear sirens blaring today, Thursday, October 19th.

The Great Washington Shakeout will take place at 10:19 am, with about a dozen coastal tsunami sirens sounding for two minutes in Whatcom County.

Sirens will be followed by sample evacuation instructions in English and Spanish.

Steven Freidrich from the Washington State Department of Emergency Management says that the drill helps people with muscle memory in the event another, larger earthquake should strike.

Meanwhile, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office is reminding people not to call 911 if they hear the sirens, as this is only a test.
