Scientists in Western Washington are looking to train members of the public to help in the fight against the invasive European green crabs.

The non-native crabs that pose a serious threat to our local shellfish industry were first seen in Squalicum and Drayton Harbors back in 2019.

Washington Sea Grant and the Whatcom County Extension of WSU have partnered to create a free training session for locals to help determine the population of the invasive species.

The training session happens Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the BP Heron Center where attendees will learn how to perform 20-minute surveys to identify crab molts and report findings through an app.
