BELLINGHAM, WA – We could soon see grizzlies roaming again in eastern Whatcom County.
The National Parks Service and the US Fish & Wildlife Service are both seeking public comment on their proposal to reintroduce the bears within the North Cascades Ecosystem.
Grizzly bears haven’t been seen in the area since the mid-90s due to overhunting.
A potential plan, which falls under a ruling in the federal Endangered Species Act, could also give nearby communities the tools they need to manage their return if a plan is approved.
The public comment period on the proposed grizzly plans is open through November 13.
