NEWHALEM, Wash. – The North Cascades Highway has reopened.
WSDOT says they reopened Highway 20 between Newhalem and Rainy Pass at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, August 9th.
Travelers along the highway may encounter firefighting personnel as the battle to control the Sourdough Wildfire near Diablo Lake continues.
Traffic control measures will be in place and stopping along that stretch of the highway is not allowed.
The National Parks Service says camping, trailheads, overlooks and other recreation east of Newhalem are still closed.
That part of the highway remains an active firefighting area and the road could close again depending on the behavior of the fire.
As of yesterday, the fire has burned up to 1,700 acres.
You can monitor trail and camp closures on the North Cascades National Park website.
