BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A hiker charged with stabbing a mountain biker over a trail argument in Bellingham has been sentenced.
70-year-old Dake Traphagen pleaded guilty to third-degree assault on April 26th, according to court documents.
Traphagen was hiking with a group of people on a trail near Y Road in March 2021 when he got into an argument with a mountain biker over who had the right of way.
Traphagen claimed he stabbed the biker in self defense, but video of the incident shot by one of his companions prompted prosecutors to file charges against him.
The bike rider was taken to Harborview Medical Center because of the severity of his wounds.
Traphagen was sentenced to one month of home detention and is required to pay over $3,700 in restitution to the victim.
