BELLINGHAM, WA. – (KGMI.com) A local firefighters’ union issued a warning after several stations went engineless over the weekend.
Bellingham and Whatcom County Firefighters Local #106 posted on social media that Stations 6 and 31 have been operating without fire engines since Friday, December 1st.
Union Vice President Hunter Elliot told KIRO that the stations, located on Marine Drive and Deemer Road respectively, service some of Bellingham’s busiest areas.
The engines have been undergoing maintenance outside of the county because the city of Bellingham does not currently have a technician that can complete the work on the rigs.
A different station will loan out an engine and ladder truck until those engines are back in service.
Elliot said the union issued a public safety alert on Saturday to warn people about an increase in response times due to the engine outages.
He said that the engines are expected to be back in service by Wednesday, December 6th.
