BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Many of us celebrate milestone birthdays by doing something special, but a local mountain biker recently took it to the next level.
Jon Ralston celebrated his 40th birthday on August 3rd by riding every trail on Galbraith Mountain in Bellingham.
The feat, known as Allbraith, included 95 miles of cycling, 15,000 feet of elevation gain, and took him 20 hours to complete.
Ralston says planning was key to helping him accomplish the feat.
“There’s sixty something miles of single-track up on Galbraith itself, but all the back and forth and we rode connecting trails multiple times to get to different parts of the mountain,” said Ralston. “So, it ended up adding 30 to 35 miles on to the total of single-track that’s up there.”
He also had support from his family, the local mountain biking community, and the FrinGe Racing Team.
“We planned on taking between 14 and 16 hours. We started at 4 a.m. on my birthday and of course it ended up taking closer to 20 hours nonstop,” said Ralston. “We started around 4 a.m. and literally finished at 11:57 p.m. later that night.”
Ralston is also an ultramarathoner and recently completed the Chuckanut 50k in less than 6 hours and skied the Cross-Country leg of the Ski to Sea race.
