LUMMI NATION, Wash. – Lummi Nation leaders and those of about a dozen other Washington tribes are getting revved up over fuel price increases they blame on the state’s new carbon-cap system.

The Seattle Times reports that fuel suppliers have been boosting their prices since a surcharge on carbon emissions took effect at the beginning of the year.

The tribes say that amounts to them having to pay state taxes, and lawmakers left them out as they carved out exemptions for farmers, aviation and other industries.

They also say the state was not honest with them when they said the new regulations would add just pennies to the cost of a gallon of fuel.

AAA data shows that fuel prices have risen about 40-cents per gallon over the national average in Washington.

The governor’s office and Department of Ecology blame fuel suppliers for unfairly passing their costs on, but say they don’t have the power to regulate the industry.

A meeting between the tribes and the governor’s office is scheduled for May 31st.
