SEATTLE, Wash. – The driver who hit and killed a Black Lives Matter protester and seriously injured another will spend 6-and-a-half years in prison.

KOMO reports a King County judge sentenced 30-year-old Dawit Kelete Friday.

Kelete drove around barriers and the wrong way down a ramp to I-5 in Seattle, which the State Patrol had closed for protesters on July 4th, 2020.

He hit and killed 24-year-old Summer Taylor and critically injured 35-year-old Diaz Love.

Kelete pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, and reckless driving earlier this summer.

He told the court that he was dealing with an untreated opioid addiction at the time.

The judge told the court that there was no evidence that Kelete intentionally hit the protesters.
