OLYMPIA, Wash. – Washington could soon become the next state to explore the use of magic mushrooms in healthcare settings.

SB 5263 would create a formal task force charged with studying the therapeutic effects of psilocybin.

The bill, if it is signed into law, would not make the mushrooms legal for recreational use just yet.

KIRO reports that researchers at the University of Washington and across the state are currently studying the plant’s effects on mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety.

The bill was passed by the House 87-10 on Tuesday, April 11th.
