FERNDALE, Wash. – A new project has been announced in Ferndale to cut down on costs for students.

The Ferndale Public Schools Foundation is a nonprofit charity that will offer scholarships, remove fees and cover necessary materials for students in need of support.

The foundation’s board of directors consists of several community members from Ferndale, including one high school student.

One of the programs it offers, called “You Belong Cards,” will give teachers an option to apply for funds if they notice a student needs something like supplies, food or a coat.

About 58% of students in the district came from low-income households last year, according to executive director Tracy Diehl.

More information, including opportunities to get involved or donate, can be found on the Ferndale School District’s website.
