BELLINHAM, Wash. – Almost half of Whatcom County’s residents report experiencing food insecurity as pandemic-related food benefits come to an end.

A team of researchers surveyed residents in all 39 counties and found some level of food insecurity across the state.

In Whatcom County, 44% said they were somewhat or very food insecure.

Skagit county residents reported similar numbers, with 41% saying they have some level of food insecurity.

The Seattle Times reports the Bellingham Food Bank is serving 4,000 households per week, double the number they usually help.

The survey finds rural residents, people of color, families with children and renters are having the most difficulty affording enough food with inflation driving much of the need.

Washington will receive $96 million less per month in federal food assistance starting Wednesday, March 1st, as emergency SNAP benefits expire.
