OLYMPIA, WA. – (KGMI.com) A new law taking effect in less than a week hopes to stem illegal street racing in Washington.

Senate Bill 5606 was signed into law by Governor Inslee this past May.

It gives officers the ability to arrest or issue citations to drivers caught drifting or performing other vehicular stunts.

The law also prohibits racing or similar activities off of local roadways, such as parking lots or garages.

Critics say the law puts additional strains on law enforcement due to existing police pursuit legislation.

It will take effect on January 1st.
