MIAMI, FL (KGMI.COM) – The late orca Tokitae’s cause of death has been revealed to be old age and multiple chronic illnesses.

The Miami Seaquarium released a summary of her necropsy to the Miami Herald Tuesday.

It supported early reports from the Seaquarium that cited kidney failure as the main reason for her death.

She was also found to have suffered from chronic illnesses in her lungs and heart.

Tokitae was held in captivity at the Seaquarium ever since her capture off Whidbey Island more than 50 years ago.

The Southern Resident died unexpectedly on August 18 as plans were being made for her live return to her home waters.
