BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Over $13 million in funding for salmon recovery efforts will go towards projects in Whatcom County.
The Washington State Salmon Recovery Funding Board and Puget Sound Partnership announced 150 statewide grants on Monday, September 18th, totaling more than $81 million.
The Lummi Nation, Nooksack Tribe and Whatcom Land Trust all received grants to help restore and conserve different parts of the Nooksack River.
The biggest project will grant nearly $10 million to the Nooksack Tribe to restore 2.5 miles of the river at Fish Camp Reach.
Nooksack River is home to Chinook salmon and bull and steelhead trout, who are all listed as “threatened” with extinction under the federal Endangered Species Act.
Whatcom County received the most funding of any county in the state.
Skagit County secured the second most with nearly $12 million in grants.
