OLYMPIA, Wash. – A proposed house bill would establish a per-mile charge on vehicle usage of public roads in Washington state.

Under the bill, drivers could volunteer to participate starting July 1, 2025, at 2.5 cents per mile and it would become mandatory for all drivers starting in 2030.

Participants would receive tax credits for gas taxes paid throughout the year.

The bill comes in response to increased usage of electric vehicles that are bringing in lower gas taxes.

If the trend continues, the state transportation system may lack funds needed for construction and maintenance of highways and ferries.
