FERNDALE, WA. – (KGMI.com) Heavy rain and rising snow levels are expected to lead to some minor flooding here in Whatcom County.

The National Weather Service in Seattle issued a flood warning for the south fork of the Nooksack River this morning.

Emergency Management Deputy Director John Gargett says they did see some water covering Highway 9 near Acme this morning, Tuesday, December 5th, but the river level in that area is now starting to drop.

In Ferndale, the Nooksack is currently forecast to crest at around 18 feet on Wednesday, December 6th, which would put it in the minor flood stage.

Parts of Skagit County are forecast to see major flooding though.

The Skagit River near Concrete is forecast to crest at over 38 feet Tuesday into Wednesday, and in Mount Vernon, the river is forecast to crest at around 35 feet.

Overall, Gargett says they do not expect any serious flooding in Whatcom County, but water over roadways like Slater Road could lead to some closures.

He says residents in our area should be prepared for longer commutes in the coming days.

Use caution if you do come across water covering the roadways and never drive around road closed signs.
