SALISH SEA, WA. – (KGMI.com) A potentially days-old Southern Resident Orca calf has been spotted in the Puget Sound.
The Center for Whale Research says that two of their researchers spotted the calf travelling with the J-Pod on Tuesday.
Researchers had observed the same group three days earlier, where no calves were spotted.
The calf’s gender and mother were not confirmed, but researchers believe that J40 is the most likely match.
This would mark the first calf born to the J-Pod in a year and the first calf for J40 if she’s confirmed as the mother, according to the nonprofit group Orca Conservancy.
If the calf continues to survive beyond its early stages of life, it will become the 77th member of the total Southern Resident Orca population.
