BELLINGHAM, WA – Dog owners in Washington are being warned to take precautions as a mysterious, potentially deadly illness is spreading among our canine friends.
The state veterinarian says no cases of the respiratory illness have been reported yet in Washington.
But KIRO reports that it seems to have originated in Oregon, where there are currently over 100 cases.
The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic lab is trying to determine the cause of the highly contagious disease that causes fever, lethargy, and a wet hacking cough.
The state Department of Agriculture says dogs with these symptoms should be taken to a vet, and veterinarians are asked to report cases of high mortality events in dogs – or other animals.
For now, experts recommend vaccinating your dog and avoiding places where dogs congregate.
