BELLINGHAM, WA. – (KGMI.com) A suspect is in custody after a machete attack near downtown Bellingham over the weekend.
Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy says officers were called to an assault at Maritime Heritage Park around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 19th.
They arrived to see the suspect running away with the machete before officers used batons to stop him and take him into custody.
An investigation revealed that the suspect, 37-year-old Wayne Yale, struck someone on the shoulder with the weapon.
Yale told police that the victim told him to be quiet and believed that to be a violation of his rights, which is why Yale said he “tried to kill him.”
Yale had an additional warrant for failing to appear for a court hearing on assault, harassment and obstructing charges.
He remains at Whatcom County Jail without bail.
