BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A suspect in the 1987 death of a Bellingham woman has been extradited to Whatcom County.
29-year-old Wendy Aughe was last seen on April 25th, 1987, after going on a date with a man she had met earlier that day.
Court documents state that the man identified himself as Mike Johnson, who had stayed at the Lighthouse Mission shelter and was last seen driving Aughe’s car.
The car was later found abandoned in Eugene, Oregon.
Investigators searching Aughe’s home found blood spatters and other DNA evidence on her bed.
The blood was confirmed to be Aughe’s, but her body has never been found.
Additional DNA evidence found that the man who claimed to be Mike Johnson was actually 63-year-old Darren O’Neall.
O’Neall has been serving time in an Oregon jail since 2008 for rape, kidnapping, and assault charges.
He’s expected to make his first court appearance in Whatcom County on Thursday, March 2nd.
