BELLINGHAM, Wash. – All lanes of Meridian Street were closed in both directions on Wednesday morning, July 5th, after a Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office patrol car collided with another vehicle.

The patrol car was heading southbound when it struck the passenger side of the second vehicle at the intersection of Kellog Road and Meridian at 6 a.m.

Both drivers, 42-year-old Ryan Rathbun and 22-year-old Hailey Bergquist, were injured and transported to Peacehealth St. Joseph Medical Center.

Rathbun received a Medal of Honor in May after he was shot in the line of duty last year.

He underwent numerous surgeries and procedures before returning to duty last December.

Meridian reopened two hours after the crash.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
