BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Brighter walkways and darker skies.

That is the result of a retrofit of lighting on the Western Washington University campus in Bellingham.

The school partnered with Puget Sound Energy and Lumenal Lighting to swap hundreds of old light fixtures with LEDs that provide much more and better quality light.

The new fixtures are also Dark Sky compliant, meaning they reduce overhead light pollution and cause less interference with animals that navigate at night.

The LEDs use about half the energy needed for the old lights and will reduce maintenance costs.
