BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A man wanted for robbery, theft of a firearm and other charges is in critical condition after police say he shot himself as officers closed in.

Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy says Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputies spotted the 40-year-old Bellingham man in a car at Whatcom Falls Park last Thursday evening.

He sped away and eventually crashed the car on a dead-end street off of Old Fairhaven Parkway.

He fled on foot and sheriff and police officers chased him to the side of I-5.

An officer used a non-lethal weapon to subdue him but then heard a gunshot.

Medics treated him for a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene and transported him to the hospital.

Police haven’t identified the suspect.
