OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington state Senate passed a bill on Saturday, April 8th, banning the sale, manufacture, and import of assault weapons in the state.
But House Bill 1240 allows exemptions for manufacture and sale to law enforcement and the military.
And the legislation does not prohibit the possession of assault weapons.
It also excludes antique and inoperable firearms.
The bill was requested by Attorney General Bob Ferguson and Governor Jay Inslee and sponsored by Representative Strom Peterson, a Democrat from Edmonds.
The bill now heads back to the House for a second vote because it was amended in the Senate.
