BELLINGHAM, Wash. – More details have been released about what a potential new Whatcom County Jail could look like.
The Whatcom County Council was presented with costs, pros and cons, and building details during a presentation on Tuesday, May 23rd.
Three locations are in consideration for the new jail: in the parking lot next to the County Courthouse, in the Irongate neighborhood, and on LaBounty Drive in Ferndale.
The site next to the courthouse is projected to be the costliest at $207 million.
The Irongate site is in the middle at roughly $170 million, while the LaBounty Drive location pencils out to cost the least at $137 million.
The location will also help determine how other services, such as mental health and subtance abuse treatment centers, would be provided for inmates.
As for funding, County Executive Sadpal Sidhu wrote in a memo to the council that a combined .2% sales tax and 30-year bond issue would cover the costs.
The final say on funding for a new jail will be decided by voters.
