Whatcom County Fire District 4 says they’re struggling to maintain emergency services.

They’re considering asking residents for a fire levy increase to continue their contract with North Whatcom Fire and Rescue.

Whatcom 4 says the contract is crucial in providing a higher level of emergency service at less cost for taxpayers. The funding would go towards maintaining a full-time, 24-hour staff at the Britton Loop Road Station 12.

Without necessary staffing, they say response times could increase by up to 30 minutes or more.

Fire officials are inviting community members to learn more at two meetings this month:

Tuesday, March 21 at 7 p.m. – Rome Grange, 2821 Mt. Baker Highway, Bellingham

Saturday, March 25 at 9 a.m. – Station 12, 4142 Britton Loop Road, Bellingham
