BELLINGHAM, WA – (KGMI.com) Several local projects, including in Whatcom and Skagit Counties, were awarded over $4 million in federal grants to improve road safety.

The US Department of Transportation announced the funding on Wednesday as part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All program.

The Lummi Nation is receiving just over $1 million to develop a traffic safety action plan and add safety improvements at nine targeted intersections.

Skagit County and the City of Anacortes also received a combined $400,000 to develop safety action plans of their own.

US Representative Rick Larsen says the funds are much needed following a 32-year high in traffic fatalities on Washington roads and highways in 2022.
