NORTH CASCADES, Wash. – Washington State Department of Transportation crews have been making progress but say it will still be four to six weeks before Highway 20 is open over the North Cascades.

They are working to clear snow from both the east and west sides of the annual winter closure, finding more than four feet of snow and ice in some areas.

They have cleared about 14 miles on the west side, and people were able to bike on that section while crews are off over the weekend.

WSDOT warns anyone recreating on the highway to watch for possible debris and check avalanche danger with the Northwest Avalanche Center.
