BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Student workers at Western Washington University have voted overwhelmingly to form a union.

By a vote of 805-19, educational student employees voted to form Western Academic Workers United-UAW on Monday, June 12th.

Despite the vote occurring during Western’s finals week, over 75% of the school’s 1,100 student workers cast their ballots.

Educational student employees include tutors, teaching assistants, and research assistants, among other academic workers.

The group filed to form a union in December, and certification of the election results is expected in the near future.

Another group of 1,500 student workers, who work clerical and maintenance jobs, also recently announced they are gathering authorization cards to join the same union.
