PORTLAND, OR – (MyBellinghamNow.com) Three people died while trying to save a baby during an ice storm in Portland this week.
But fast action by an Oregon young adult helped rescue the toddler.
18-year-old Majiah Washington opened her blinds on Wednesday to find a red SUV with a downed power line on it and a couple who had been putting their baby in the car.
The baby’s pregnant mother and her boyfriend both tried to get the baby to safety, but slipped on the icy concrete and electrocuted themselves on the live wire.
The mother’s young brother was also electrocuted when he came out to help.
Washington still decided to try to save the 9-month-old despite just seeing three people shocked to death.
She touched the father’s body while grabbing the baby, but was not shocked, to the confusion of local rescue teams.
Authorities say the baby was examined at a hospital and is fine.
Oregon’s governor declared a statewide emergency Thursday night following at least 10 deaths from hypothermia and falling trees or utility poles.
