BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A man is in custody after attempting to stab a minor in downtown Bellingham.

Bellingham Police spokesperson Megan Peters says that the suspect exchanged words with a juvenile near the WTA station on Railroad Avenue on Thursday, Nov. 21.

The suspect, identified as a 40-year-old man, took out a knife and began threatening the child. Another minor stepped in to deescalate the situation, but the suspect swung the knife towards them and sliced their jacket.

An adult was able to get the children to safety as the suspect attempted to leave the area.

Officers ended up using a baton and a taser in order to take the 40-year-old suspect into custody.

The man was taken to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center as a precaution before being booked into the Whatcom County Jail.
