OLYMPIA, WA (MYBELLINGHAMNOW.COM) – A scan of your hand could be the only thing you’d need to buy alcohol at a concert or sports event if lawmakers ok a bill before the state Senate.
Senate Bill 6179 would allow liquor license holders to use biometric identifiers to confirm customers’ ages.
Tyler Blackney with Amazon says a device they’ve developed analyzes a person’s palm and is already in use in hundreds of establishments for non-alcohol purchases.
Shannon Patch is with a concessions operator at Climate Pledge Arena and says they support use of the technology.
She says it would prevent people from using fake IDs, reduce liability for vendors and reduce lines and wait times at concession stands.
The bill would require people to opt-in to the program by providing palm prints or other biometric identifiers.
Those identifiers could only be used for liquor sales and not for any other program.
The Senate Labor and Commerce Committee held a public hearing on the bill on Monday.
