WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Several affordable housing projects in Whatcom County are getting a boost from the state.
The Department of Commerce announced last week that it’s investing over $54 million into 70 affordable housing projects across the state.
The grants will be used to support water-related infrastructure.
The City of Bellingham was awarded $1 million for its senior housing development near Bellis Fair Mall.
The city partnered with the Opportunity Council to purchase the property in 2024, with plans for over 120 affordable rental units for low-income families and seniors.
The City of Ferndale also received $1 million for the Kulshan Community Land Trust.
The organization is currently in the pre-development phase of the Thornton Village, which is expected to bring up to 50 affordable homes to northeast Ferndale.
Meanwhile, the City of Everson secured nearly $900,000 for the Mateo Meadows Community near downtown.
Construction began in late 2024 and once completed, it will feature 30 townhomes and 14 apartments within walking distance of E. Main Street.
