BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A pair of public meetings are planned to discuss potential changes to Fairhaven’s skyline.

The Bellingham City Council says that the discussions in upcoming meetings will include potentially changing a municipal code for a portion of that the Fairhaven neighborhood.

The code amendment was proposed in conjunction with a developer’s request to build a new property at a site known as “The Pit”.

Located near 11th and Mill Street, this parcel of land is currently being used for free parking and is zoned in an area that allows for a maximum three-story building.

Dominion Sustainable Development Corporation (DSDC) is in the process of buying the land and has requested it to be rezoned to accommodate at least one four story building.

The Bellingham Planning Commission saw a preview of DSDC’s plans under both current and proposed zoning laws in March. If the city’s municipal code change is approved, DSDC’s project would include five new buildings, a pedestrian walkway and an easement to connect the popular South Bay Trail.

Public meetings for both the rezoning and “The Pit” will be held on June 3.
