BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A program to overhaul transportation in Bellingham will go in front of the council next month.

Holly Street’s new protected bike lane was a pilot project for the Draft Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The draft program seeks to prioritize pedestrians, non-motorized vehicles and public transportation over single-occupant cars.

TIP goes hand-in-hand with the newly adopted Bicycle Master Plan according to Public Works spokesperson Natalie Monro.

Now, the draft will go before the city council, and they will decide whether to move forward to the design stage. Both the bike plan and TIP are slow moving, with some of the projects years away from design.

Monro said the goal of a proposed protected bike lane on James Street will be to make the street safer and more convenient for all users.
