BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The City of Bellingham wants to hear about your experience as a renter and your thoughts on some potential rule changes.
The city council is considering two ordinances that aim to curtail excessive fees, colloquially referred to as “junk fees.”
One ordinance requires landlords and property managers to be transparent and minimal with their fees charged outside of monthly rent.
Another ordinance seeks to establish similar requirements on manufactured and mobile homes.
One notable change is that application fees would be refunded to those not accepted for mobile or manufactured home tenancy. Also under the proposed rules, landlords will not be able to charge more than 2% additionally for late rent, or 1% in mobile or manufactured homes.
Other hidden costs like charges to use in-unit appliances will not be allowed.
Renters in Bellingham will have until Feb. 14 to fill out the survey.
