BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Big Lots, a nationwide retail chain that specializes in selling large appliances and furniture at a discount, will likely be closing their Bellingham doors within the next few months.
The company posted a banner on their website announcing its closure last week and have placed signs on the storefront. A timeline of the closure is not certain however, as the store manager says the Birchwood Avenue location is still receiving shipments of new merchandise.
The manager estimated in a phone call with MyBellinghamNow.com that they may be open for another eight to 12 weeks.
Another 11 stores out of Washington’s 26 locations will also close in the coming days as the company reported significant drops in revenue earlier this year. Most of the state’s stores planned to close are in the Puget Sound region.
The Bellingham Big Lots’ location is the former site of Albertsons that closed in 2016, leaving the surrounding Birchwood neighborhood in what’s called a “food desert“.
Albertsons dropped their land-use restriction on the property following a state Attorney General investigation, allowing a grocer to occupy the storefront in the future.
