BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Boeing is in talks to buy Spirit AeroSystems, the fuselage supplier for its 737 Max jetliners.

The Wall Street Journal reports Spirit has had preliminary discussions with Boeing and is exploring its options, but a deal is not certain. Spirit is also looking into selling operations in Ireland that make parts for Boeing’s main rival Airbus, according to the Journal.

Spirit AeroSystems was formed in 2005 when Boeing sold some of its Midwest factories.

Boeing and Spirit have both come under fire for manufacturing problems following the door-panel incident on an Alaska Airlines flight in January. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is giving Boeing 90 days to come up with a plan to fix quality concerns and meet safety standards.
