BOISE, ID (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Idaho’s legislature just passed a bill to ban the use of public funds for gender-affirming care.
The bill passed the state Senate floor on an overwhelming majority Friday and is currently heading to Gov. Brad Little’s desk. The Republican governor has previously been outspoken against the notion of using public funds for gender-affirming care.
“Public funds” encompasses state employees using work health insurance and adults covered by Medicaid.
LGBTQ+ equality think tank Movement Advancement Project said that Idaho would be at least the 10th state to pass a law banning public money for gender-affirming care. The ACLU and others against the Idaho bill believe it will almost certainly be challenged in federal court.
Defense from Idaho lawmakers on their attempts to deny transgender residents affirming care have not been very successful in recent years.
