OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A rent stabilization bill that seeks to limit rent increases to 7% statewide just passed the house.

House Bill 2114 scraped through on an 11-vote margin Tuesday night, right before the house of origin hearing deadline. The bill also limits late fees to 1.5% of monthly rent and exempts new construction for 10 years.

As the last bill heard by the Washington House of Representatives, it now heads to the state Senate. The Seattle Times reports that a version of the rent stabilization bill died last month in committee.

HB 2114 has drawn strong arguments about the measure’s pros-and-cons. Supporters of the measure urge action against large increases in order to protect renters and opponents say the proposal doesn’t target drivers of housing costs.
