BOISE, IDAHO (AP) – A judge has ordered Bryan Kohberger to serve life in prison without parole for killing four University of Idaho students, including a young man from Skagit County.
Judge Steven Hippler handed down four life sentences for the brutal stabbing deaths of Ethan Chapin, his girlfriend Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves in November 2022.
“His actions have made him the worst of the worst,” Hippler said during the sentencing. “Even in pleading guilty, he’s giving nothing hinting of remorse or redemption, nothing suggesting even a recognition or understanding, let alone regret for, the pain that he has caused.”
Friends and relatives of the victims delivered powerful statements of love, anguish and condemnation at the sentencing hearing Wednesday morning.
Goncalves’s brother Steven says the family, who was against the plea deal, will continue to speak out for victims in capital crime cases.
“Despite the magnitude and brutality of the crime, the prosecution chose to accept a plea deal behind closed doors without trial, without ever consulting our family in any meaningful way,” Goncalves said.
Dylan Mortenson, a surviving roommate of the attack, sobbed as she described the loss of her friends.
“He didn’t just take them from the world, he took them from me,” Mortenson said. “My friends, my people who felt like my home.”
Kohberger was also given a 10-year sentence for burglary and assessed $270,000 in fines and civil penalties.
He has waived his right to appeal.
