BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A man who led several law enforcement agencies through a pursuit across the border has been sentenced.
42-year-old Shawn Bergstrom pleaded guilty on Monday, June 9 to second degree assault and attempting to elude a police vehicle.
Bergstrom, who is a Canadian citizen, hijacked a vehicle with a machete near the border in December. He sped through a border crossing checkpoint, nearly struck a Customs and Border Protection officer, and continued the entire length of Whatcom County on I-5.
Dozens of law enforcement vehicles and aircraft followed Bergstrom into Skagit County, where he was taken into custody near the Bow Hill Rest Area.
Court documents state that Bergstrom was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident.
He was committed to Western State Hospital shortly after his arrest and was released to the Whatcom County Jail in late April.
A judge sentenced him to eight months in prison with credit for time already served, though the sentence was further shortened due to credit for good behavior. Corrections staff with the Whatcom County Jail confirmed to My Bellingham Now that Bergstrom was released early due to credit for good behavior.
