BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A driver was hospitalized following a vehicle fire near Sehome High School on Tuesday, June 4.

Bellingham Police spokesperson Megan Peters says the wreck was reported around 7:40 p.m. The vehicle was driving down Bill McDonald Parkway when it hit a tree and soon caught fire.

The driver was pulled out of the vehicle before first responders arrived and one witness who happened to be a nurse gave them life-saving care. The driver was then transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.

Peters says the driver is suspected to have been driving under the influence of drugs, but no charges have been filed.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Bill McDonald Parkway was closed in both directions in front of Sehome High School for about two hours before reopening around 10 p.m.
