Proponents say they’ve turned in enough signatures to put an initiative that would relax rules on police pursuits before state lawmakers.

Initiative-2113 would allow police pursuits if an officer has reasonable suspicion that a person has “violated the law” and poses a “threat to the safety of others.”

That’s a reduced standard from current law, which only allows pursuits of those suspected of violent or sexual offenses, assaults, escape or DUI. Pursuits would have to be done while following “appropriate safety standards.”

Proponents say the initiative would return more control to local sheriff and police departments. They need 325,000 valid signatures and say that 410,000 signatures have been submitted to the secretary of state’s office as of Thursday, December 15th.

If enough signatures are valid the initiative will go before legislature that can approve it, offer an alternative or let it go before voters.
