BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The City of Bellingham has begun construction on an improved facility for Parks and Recreation.

Bellingham Public Works spokesperson Torhil Ramsay says that work began at the slice of land on Woburn Street next to Bayview Cemetery in May 2024.

Crews have since cleared the area of the Parks and Recreation Department’s old facility of a horse barn and caretaker house and have begun to pour the concrete footings for new storage buildings

The project, called the Woburn Operations site, will be outfitted with bulk storage for both Public Works, Parks and Recreation as well as nursery space.

The over $6.8 million project is eligible for the city’s 1% for Art program, which will be decided upon once the project is complete.

A historic weathervane and cupola were removed before demolition and will be saved for inclusion in the final project.

The city adds that pedestrian improvements will be added to the area including new sidewalks and improved two pedestrian crossings.

The pedestrian improvements as well as building construction is expected to be complete by March 2025.
