BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The work to cleanup Padden Creek is continuing after two fuel leaks spilled over 600 gallons of diesel into the creek.

Cleanup crews say wildlife responders recovered the carcasses of three coho salmon and one crayfish on Sunday.

No other impacts to wildlife have been found as of Monday, but members of the public are being urged not to try to capture any oiled or injured animals.

Instead, they’re asked to report any sightings to 1-800-22-BIRDS.

My Bellingham Now previously reported that roughly 676 gallons of diesel were released into Padden Creek last week following two separate fuel spills from the same faulty pump at the site of a fish passage project.

In both instances, fuel was contained before it could reach Bellingham Bay.

The cleanup response is being led by crews from the Washington Department of Ecology, the City of Bellingham, Lummi Nation, Nooksack Indian Tribe and city contractor Faber Construction.

Crews are now preparing to remove any contaminated soil from the site.

A stop work order is currently in effect for the project area until the new pump is operational and any impacted soil is removed.

To report oiled or injured wildlife, call 1-800-22-BIRDS  (1-800-222-4737)
