SPOKANE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A major bust in eastern Washington targeted organized gang crime – including drug trafficking, money laundering and cockfighting.
U.S. Attorney’s District Office in Eastern Washington said that 28 people were arrested in raids by federal, tribal and local agencies Thursday morning.
The Seattle Times reports authorities link the drug distribution and cockfighting enterprises to the prison gang La Nuestra Familia. Local street gangs affiliated with La Nuestra Familia called Norteños were the focus of these raids.
The indictment for 34 people alleges that four people operated armed drug trafficking rings that committed a laundry list of crimes including attempting to kill informants. Investigators said the operation reached Spokane, Walla Walla and Yakima counties, the Yakima Reservation and Louisiana, Colorado and Arkansas.
During the searches, more than 350 officers recovered 37 firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, pounds of methamphetamine and cocaine, over 8,000 pills laced with fentanyl and over $20,000 cash. More than 150 roosters believed to be used for cockfighting were seized in Yakima County and sent to an animal rescue in Roy.
U.S. Attorneys said that more arrests will likely be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
